The great thing about PlayStation State of Play 2023 and 2024 events is they always bring us the best and latest PS5 games, be it trailers or more info. The PlayStation State of Play 2024 event from January was exactly like that, it brought us a lot of updates and 40 minutes of cool content that we will see in the months and year to come. With that in mind, here’s what was shown during the PlayStation State of Play January 2024 event and what we can expect from this.
When is the next PlayStation State of Play?
If you are wondering when is the next PlayStation State of Play, the reality is that it can be at any given time. Generally, Sony holds these events every few months, at least a few times a year. So we can expect a new State of Play sometime until the end of June, maybe a lot faster. It depends on what games will be launching and if they accumulate more trailers.
Death Stranding 2 has an official name
Death Stranding was quite an amazing game, despite the fact that some called it a walking simulator. As we expect from Kojima, the story is quite amazing, there are lots of creative elements, and it didn’t shy away from bringing in a unique perspective towards society and mankind. The new Death Stranding game is called On the Beach. We have Norma Reedus coming back as Sam Porter Bridges.
What’s interesting is that in the second installment, he is dealing with the Drawbridge group. The video has a villain who holds a hybrid between a guitar and a chainsaw, and that weapon also shoots lightning. There’s definitely a lot of creativity to be had here, and the game does shine when it comes to how it manages to push the boundaries with its story. We still don’t have a release date for this one, but it should be coming out either this year or next year. We will update with more information when available.
Also, another piece of news dropped from Kojima Productions as well. Aside from Death Stranding, the great game director is also working on a new IP. No specific details are shared yet, aside from the fact that he is creating an action espionage title. It’s hard to know what this game will be about, but it definitely seems like a Metal Gear-like game. However, knowing Kojima, he always tries to blur the line between a movie and a video game, so it’s certainly expected to be very cinematic.
Rise of the Ronin had a deep dive
What we like about Team Ninja’s new game is that they are going deep into the world of samurai and they will try to make it one of the best games within that theme. The game is set to be an action title, with a souls-like approach to combat, but also its own style and approach. They will have a hub world in Yokohama, and from there you can go to other regions and complete missions.
There is also a parry system, something that a lot of people have been craving for. And on top of that, they are also offering us a 1 on 1 sword combat approach too. It’s nice to see how this game is shaping up to be, and it certainly looks gorgeous. The PlayStation State of Play PS5 was quite generous with gameplay for this particular title, and it does look incredible.
Unlike many of the other PlayStation State of Play announcements, this one also has a release date very soon. It releases on March 22nd, so it’s around a month away from the time of this writing. It certainly holds a lot of promise, and the game itself is certainly close to becoming a new standard for ninja or samurai themed games. If it will manage to actually do that, we’ll have to wait and see very soon.
Until Dawn receives a remaster and it’s also coming to PC
Until Dawn was very popular during the PlayStation State of Play PS4 era, and now it will arrive to PS5 in all of its glory. There were a lot of rumors regarding this game and we can tell you right now that it’s actually real. Yes, the game does have a remaster that will arrive on PC and on PS5 sometime this year. Obviously, the remaster will have some enhanced graphics, and the minute and a half shown during the PlayStation State of Play was promising.
It’s nice to see that Until Dawn is indeed coming to PC as well. Until now, it was available solely for Sony’s console, and many people were forced to get this console to play it. From our experience, we found Until Dawn to be one of the most creative and engaging games within its genre, certainly a genre-defining title. It had its flaws, and the story’s approach didn’t appeal to everyone. Yet a lot of people wanted to experience its unique story and now it seems they will finally have the opportunity to do so.
Stellar Blade
Another game that received attention during the PlayStation State of Play January 2024 event was Stellar Blade. The action game is coming late April and it takes place on an apocalyptic Earth. There are mysterious enemies that force people to get away from their colony. We will follow Eve, along with the companions Lily and Adam. With their help, we will destroy the various mech enemies.
What we like about Stellar Blade is that it does seem to have a combination of different styles and games. We see a lot of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry in there, but at the same time it also tries to be its own thing. And that’s why we think it’s one of the most interesting and cooler titles shown during this event.
A new trailer for Dragon’s Dogma 2
There’s no denying that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of the world’s most awaited RPGs for 2024, and it’s around a month away. That’s the cool thing about the game, the fact that it continues to impress a lot of people, and yet at the same time it’s incredibly fun and interesting. That’s why it’s a great idea to check it out for yourself and see the latest trailer.
Sony did a great job at showcasing some of the different classes and their abilities. They also try out something unique and new all the time, and it’s nice to see the way everything adds up together. With that in mind, most people already made up their mind when it comes to acquiring or not acquiring the game. Since it’s one of the most long awaited sequels, it’s safe to say there’s a ton of interest in this game, as it should be.
SEGA announces Sonic X Shadow Generations
What exactly is this game? According to Sega, they are making an enhanced remaster for Sonic Generations. However, it also adds Shadow the Hedgehog into the mix, and all Shadow-based content will be new here. The trailer that they showed during the PlayStation State of Play event showcases the same levels we saw in Sonic Generations.
Aside from that, though, they do have a few levels where Shadow is taking the lead. The idea of taking an older game and adding a new character with new levels is quite interesting. We hope other developers will take note and try out this type of idea, just because it’s so refreshing, but also new and very interesting. The remaster with new content is coming to multiple consoles and PC during the fall season this year.
New PSVR2 games Legendary Tales and Metro Awakening
The game is quite impressive and the cool thing about it is that it pushes us in a fantasy world with a lot going on. We get to battle skeletons and fantasy creatures using bows, hammers, swords and magic. It seems more than your standard fantasy game, and the VR element itself plays very well. That’s why despite not being the prime focus for the PlayStation State of Play 2024 event we just saw, it certainly feels like one of those games that we need to check out and test for ourselves.
Speaking of VR, there is a new game in the Metro series, called Awakening. It’s a VR only title, and it will be a prequel for Metro 2033. What it does is it puts us in the shoes of a doctor that tries to find his wife. He goes through the metro tunnels and that adds an entirely new later of adventures to the amazing Metro stories.
Dave the Diver comes to PS5
There are lots of great indie games that are developed for PC only, and it’s a lot of fun to play them on that platform. But some are very successful, and that was the case with Dave the Diver. That’s why this game is set to arrive on PS5 later this year, in May. It’s nice to see a simpler game like this on PC, and it’s even cooler to have it on PS5 as well. While it’s not a massive release for PS5, it’s safe to say a lot of people wanted to play this cool title on consoles. And it’s definitely a cool, very creative title with interesting ideas and features for you to check out.
Speaking of PC games coming to PS5, we also need to mention V Rising. It’s in Early Access on PC right now, and sometime this year will have its full release. According to the PlayStation State of Play announcement, it seems that the game is also coming to PS5. It’s very similar to survival games, it also comes with some Diablo vibes. All in all, it seems like an interesting addition to the PS5 roster, and quite a creative one at that.
Judas has a new trailer
Judas is made by the Bioshock creator, and the new trailer certainly makes the game seem very similar to his original game. With that in mind, a lot of people are willing to enter a dystopian game with first person gameplay and combat. Plus, if the trailer is anything to go by, the game is extremely colorful and just a pleasure to check out, which certainly adds to its character. We highly recommend giving it a try if you are passionate about this type of titles.
Silent Hill: The Short Message – a free spin-off
The idea of having a free to play spin-off for Silent Hill is great. Especially since this also came with a trailer for the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Unfortunately, we still have no idea when that remake is launching. But having a trailer certainly makes us more confident that the game is indeed coming very soon, and we are bound to have a lot of fun with it. Plus, it’s one of the best horror games out there, so there’s a ton of hype for that. We just hope they are doing it right and they are not rushing the production.
Conclusion
The PlayStation State of Play event was very successful, and it brought a lot of much-needed info regarding some of the latest games coming to the platform. Unlike other PlayStation State of Plays, this one was not that heavy on announcements, but it still is a lot of fun and definitely one of the most creative titles were announced.
We like the fact that the PlayStation State of Play also showed some PC games coming to PlayStation and the other way around. It’s clear that Sony is indeed committed to the idea of bringing more PS4 and PS5 games to PC. That being said, we don’t know when is the next PlayStation State of Play, but most of the games that had a release date shown won’t surpass May 2024. That makes us confident the new PlayStation State of Play will be sometime in June. We’ll have to wait and see, but even now, some great games were announced and we are excited to play them!
